Thomas Eddison and his Mother Nancy - bronze statueThe year was 1847 and a young baby boy, the youngest of seven, was born in Ohio. He was a rather sickly child when he was young and only three of his siblings survived until adulthood. He had very little formal education leaving school at the age of 9 (although I heard one story that he was kicked out because he was stupid!). His Mother Nancy took it upon herself to educate him. In fact in later years this boy who became, argubly the worlds best inventor said of his Mother:

My mother was the making of me. She was so true, so sure of me, and I felt I had some one to live for, some one I must not disappoint.”

Now imagine if his Mother, Nancy, thought, “I think my child has some “disorder”! He will never amount to much! I may as well write him off and get on with the chores around the house and other more important things I have to do. In fact I’ll send him off to be looked after by someone else while I move myself up the career ladder!” Or worse still imagine if Nancy had been ill-advised put him on some “brain dead” medication! We would live in a different world today if that had been the case.

You see the decision by Nancy to nourish the genius within her child has without doubt greatly increased the quality of life of the whole world. Every time you walk into a room and turn on a light you are benefitting from her belief in her child. Every time you go to a movie you’re benefitting from her belief in her child. Every time to listen to a record you’re benefitting from her belief in her child.

It’s no accident that children come into our lives and we as adults/parents/teachers have a duty and big responsibility to nourish them as best we can and more! For the next generation will stand on our shoulders provided we have given them loving and intelligent shoulders to stand on!

What did Nancy Edison see in her child? She saw a genius with infinite potential. Is it in every child? Absolutely! It’s in every human being period! It’s not just in some, it’s in everyone! When we start to believe this, we start to act on it and we treat our children as the genius that they truly are. And together with our absolutle unconditional love, this is the greatest of gifts we can give our children.

Nancy’s son of course was Thomas Edison. To this day he has the greatest number of patents for any human being in history – 1,093 and:

“to seek his monument turn on the light!”

Make sure you treat your child as the genius that they are, it is your most important duty! As someone once said:

“Treat a child as they are and they will remain as they are, treat them as they can and should be and they will become as they can and should be”

Want to know how to improve your study skills?

Imagine you wanted to learn how to cycle a bicycle. First you need to be able to use your legs. Without the ability to use your legs you will not be able to cycle. Once you’ve learnt to use your legs you can learn how to cycle. Now suppose you only learnt how to use 10% of your legs potential, that is only 10% of the muscles of your legs. Clearly this would mean you would cycle alot slower than if you were to use 100% or even 20%! You would especially have to put in a lot more effort going up hills!

Your brain is no different. If we only know how to use a small percentage of its potential then every time we have to learn something new it can be like cycling up hill. Which would you prefer to struggle up the hill or to learn more about how your legs work and how to use more of your legs potential? Learn more about how to use your brains potential and the perceieved “up hill” struggle of studying can be much easier and a lot more enjoyable!

This video called “The Miracle of the Human brain” will give you some idea of how your brain works and what is happening inside it as you think. Enjoy!

www.freedigitalphotos.netSometimes people think our mind is our personality and it’s “just the way we are“. Our mind may certainly be part of our personality but it’s also a muscle and like any other muscle it can improve with exercise.

The following simple exercise will improve your concentration greatly if practiced regularly. Also note the benefits are cumulative – the more you practice the more you benefit!

Have a clock with a second hand in front of you. For one minute keep your attention on your breathing – simply notice the physical movement of your chest as you breath in and out. See can you keep your attention on your breathing for one minute. It’s a great little exercise to do just before starting to study and just as you finish. Once you can manage to keep your attention on your breathing for one minute then go for three.

What will this exercise do for you? It will improve your concentration so that you can focus your mind on the task at hand.

Obviously there are many other ways we can exercise our mind – memory, creativity, listening, learning and many others. You can follow us by entering your email address on the right hand corner and receive 6 Free Video tutorials on “How to Study Effectively and Enjoyably”
