This will literally take 5 minutes. These 10 very simple tips about study skills will make all the difference in your life and, more importantly, in your kids’ school life.

Tip #1: There is always Homework: What that means is that for each subject that your kids have that day, whether they have been given official homework or not, they must review their notes. This will mean that when a big test or an end of unit test comes, they will never have to study for it. It will also help them be ready for the next lesson with their notes fresh in their minds and ready to ask any question that might have come up.

Tip #2: Keep your notes neat and clear: While your kids are applying Tip # 1, they can kill two birds with one stone and improve the quality of their notes, make sure that they have all the information they need and highlight or underline the important points. Notes full of crossed out words and messy ink patches need to be re-written altogether. In the long run, this will ensure, A: more success for final revision and B, more effective note taking habits.

Tip #3: Keep your bag tidy: At least once a week, especially with middle schoolers, have your kids completely empty their bags and tidy them up. You will be amazed what they will find! A lot of the time, some “lost” notes or homework will show up just in time. For this reason, it is better to do this in the middle of the week, Wednesday night for instance. After a little while, your kids will also become naturally tidier.

Tip #4: Use your time efficiently: If your kids get stuck on one particular piece of homework, leave it and move on to the next piece, otherwise frustration will rise and make matters worse. Go back to it after a while and things might be clearer or contact the teacher or a friend to find out more.

Tip #5: Always look ahead: This applies to the use of the planner first and I’ll let you look at the pdf file on this topic on my site. But it also applies to doing a little bit extra, even when you seem to be finished with the homework for that day. If a test is coming up, don’t leave it to the last minute. Be ahead of yourself and start on it now!

Tip #6: Do research wisely: If any research is involved in a project, just be careful how your kids use the Internet. It is the most fantastic resource, but it is also very distracting and kids get side-tracked very easily and waste a lot of time, being taken from one related topic to the other. So every now and then, just take them to the library to do their research. It will teach them a lot of useful skills too.

Tip #7: Use technology: Now I’ve said what I had to say about caution with the use of the Internet but please, whenever you can, teach your kids to use a computer effectively to apply to their school work. Let them play with PowerPoint, Publisher, Front Page, etc. Let them learn to type properly and use Word correctly. Put some relevant audio-books on their I-pods and watch the discovery Channel or educational programs with them.

Tip #8: Find YOUR way: Now, this is going to be trial and error at the beginning but for whatever subject and whatever type of homework, your kids will have to find what works for them. If results are not showing, there is something they are not doing right. Some kids may have to write all their notes over to remember facts, others might have to read them aloud, others will need to act them out or build something. Once the right way is there, it works every time.

Tip #9: Have a schedule: Your kids need to learn to prioritize and achieve things that need to be done at an early age. Always plan things according to school work and extra curricular activities that are as important. Anything else comes AFTER. Make this very clear and stick to the rule and you’ll see your kids work way more efficiently.

Tip #10: Communicate with the teachers: This applies to you and to your kids. Please if in any doubt on any subject, call the teacher or contact him/her whichever way. For your kids, always encourage them to go and ask if anything is unclear. It can be done after class or the next day, but it is important for them not to be put on the spot. It will also develop very important communication and self-confidence skills.

As you are preparing for your exams there is a lot of advice proffered on the best way in which to study, what sections to study more thoroughly than others, and so on.  A lot of very good, solid, practical advice is provided.  You know how much time to spend on each exam question, how to construct your exam answers, how to complete your exam, and so on.  This is all essential information.  But it is sometimes difficult to translate what you know you should be doing into actual reality.  What is the real secret to having exam confidence?  Confidence is, after all, the key which will unlock your ability to pass your exams easily and get good grades.

Some of us shine in the examination room, whilst others do not.  Some people sweat, go blank or freeze.  Exam stress is a common occurrence and it is not a pleasant experience.  What advice are you proffered then?  Usually this eventually is not even addressed.  The irony is that the more you worry about freezing, or going blank, the more likely it is to happen;  it becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy.  Fear of freezing creates even more exam stress.  This is a natural effect of how your mind operates – whatever you focus upon you in effect attract into your reality.

Once you understand how your mind functions, it is easy to learn how to direct it in a more positive manner.  You can learn to imagine yourself as you want to be whilst in the examination room – relaxed, calm and confident.  Imagine what it would feel like to have exam confidence.  Really picture it, allow yourself to visualize yourself sitting comfortably, pen in hand, exam paper in front of you, feeling calm and confident.  I cannot stress too much the importance of really visualizing yourself as you want to be, as opposed to how you do not want to be.

Where there is a conflict between your will power and your imagination your imagination wins.  Whatever you imagine you can create.  A picture is very definitely worth a thousand words.  Thus you can learn to use your imagination to create a relaxed state during the period before your exams and also whilst in the examination room itself.  And you can learn to create this state of exam confidence easily and quickly with the help of hypnosis downloads.

It is worth remembering as well that when you are at your most relaxed your memory is at its best.  The easiest time to learn something is also when you are in your most relaxed state.  Thus relaxation is central to learning prior to your exams and also in remembering and eloquently describing your knowledge whilst in the actual exam.  As you relax you will answer those exam questions more easily than you ever expected.  Knowing how to relax and calm yourself is an essential skill if you want to pass your exams and get good grades.

Relaxation is easy when you know how, and hypnosis downloads (or a hypnosis cd) are the quickest and easiest method of retraining your brain to relax before and during your exams.  Hypnosis is a state of relaxation, whilst also providing access to your subconscious mind.  Distant memories are more easily recalled with the help of hypnosis and I’m sure you can appreciate how useful this can be when you are answering this exam questions.  It’s just a shame that everyone is not taught hypnosis at school.

But you can get hypnosis downloads specifically designed to show you how to relax in an instant and create the most conducive state to give you exam confidence and enable you to pass your exams easily.  It’s quick, easy and very inexpensive.  This really is the top tip for passing exams and getting good grades.  The more relaxed you are, the better your memory is and the more eloquent you will be.  Exam confidence is just a hypnosis download away.

After you have enrolled into an online education program, the next thing to do is preparing yourself to attend online classes. Your first week in an online class can be a little disorienting as you may not familiar with the online learning system used by the school. You need to learn how to navigate a virtual “classroom”, interact with peers and professors through online system and familiar yourself with the online learning environment. Here are 6 online study tips that you can do in the first week of your online learning:

1. Review the course requirement

Once you received the course requirements for every subject, go through the requirements carefully to ensure you can really handle the workload. Many online students tend to dropout half-way of the course after they find out that can’t cope for the course. Don’t let this happen to you, if you find out the course is not suitable for you after reviewing the course requirements, and you decide to dropout the course, do it before the school’s withdrawal deadline so that you can get a full or partial refund of your payment.

2. Buy text books and other materials

Buy all the textbooks and other course materials early so that you won’t fall behind on your online study. Many schools have their own online bookstore or a recommended list of bookstore where you can purchase the course textbooks and other materials.

3. Upgrade computer hardware and install required software

Is your computer meeting the online system requirements? Most online learning system can be accessed directly from general internet browser such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox, but those online learning system may only run well in certain minimum version of internet browser such as IE 6.0 or Firefox 2.0, then you need to upgrade it if yours is an earlier version. The school may requires you to install their software on to your computer, make sure you read the software requirements and upgrade your computer if necessary before you install the software.

4. Get to known each other with your teachers and peers

Your online teachers may never get to know you if you are in an online course with a lot of students. Take an initiative to briefly introduce yourself by using online course message board to let your teachers aware about you. A teacher who knows a little bit about you will be more likely to help you through the course. Establish yourself as an active member in the online class, take the initiative to get to know your peers and trade your email or other online communication accounts with them. You will your life in online study much easier if you have made up your network between teachers and peers.

5. Plan your learning schedule

You should always balance your family, career (if any) and your online study life. The life balances can only be achieved with a proper time management. Establish a regular study schedule and stick to it with your best efforts. Let your friends know that you are unavailable during these times and plan your family time to fit your study schedule so that it won’t crash with each other.

6. Marks the tests and assignment schedule on your calendar

One of the key factors for success online students is “self-motivation”, nobody will look at your back and remind you on your assignment due date, and the tests schedule. You should be self-motivate enough to record all of the assignments, test, essays and project on your personal calendar once you receive a syllabus, which normally will be given out at the beginning of the online course.

Summary

Get yourself prepared for the classes at the beginning of the online course will help you to go through your learning journey smoothly. Use the above 6 online study tips to get started.

Jullie Harvard would like to invite you to explore more information on online degree programs at http://www.studykiosk.com which will help in make your education decision and select an online degree program that best fit your career goal.

When my son was growing up he spent most of his time during the school year struggling with homework assignments and studying for tests. Study skills were not taught in school so he had to struggle on his own with only my help. According to the author of S.O.A.R.® Study Skills, Susan Woodcock Kruger, M.Ed., this is an all too common occurrence. She experienced the same issues until she entered college where she discovered study strategies that eliminated her frustration and made studying more efficient. Susan identified what turns students off to ‘study skills’ and what turns them on to strategic learning!

Susan went on to become a Certified Teacher with a Master’s Degree and is a Reading/Learning Specialist. She developed her own, fun and unique study skills system that includes live and web based classes, educator training, this book and a CD set based on the acronym:

(S)oar
(O)rganize
(A)sk Questions
(R)ecord Your Progress

The S.O.A.R.® Study Skills soft cover book is beautifully designed, easy to use and filled with illustrations and photographs. There are separate introductions for parents, students, educators and students with ADD/ADHD. Family involvement is very much part of the S.O.A.R.® Study Skills program and the author invites parents to read the book with young students.

Readers will learn about task-management, organizing at home & school, prioritizing, goal-setting, note-taking strategies, space and paper organization, test-taking strategies, homework/project planning, communication & effective skills, reading skills and writing strategies.

The goal of the book is to help students of all ages get better grades in less time. The amount of homework assigned to students is overwhelming but this book can help reduce the time and frustration involved. Unlike other study skills systems I have researched the techniques in this book are meant to be simple and easily implemented. Readers of this book are most likely already stressed so the author takes great care not to overwhelm them.

I was impressed with the quizzes, charts and forms to record goals and accomplishments. These features make the book truly interactive and involve the reader in not only learning but exploring their own learning styles while developing a set of goals for eliminating homework hassles and improving grades.

There is much focus in this book on helping students both at home and at school and I really enjoyed the chapter on interacting with teachers. Students are encouraged to ask questions of their teachers and there is even a clever graphic included in this chapter that shows readers the best place to sit in a classroom!

This is a book that needs to be given to every student of any age and it needs to be a tool that every teacher uses in the classroom. The book would make a fantastic gift for a parent, student or teacher. I found the book to be fun and easy to read and I learned organizational skills that I can use in my office today. I only wish that this book had been available when I was in school so many years ago!
