I am taking entirely too long to read assigned reading in college. I would like to use a speed reading program or something to help me speed up my reading. Any suggestions? Do they really work?

I’ve only tried it, but couldn’t get myself into it. The theory behind speed reading is that you’re not sounding the word you’re looking at in your head (the way we were taught to read), instead, you learn to look at the word like a picture with a meaning. For example, when you see a car, you know it’s a car. You don’t look at the front, the back, the car doors, the mirrors, windows, and such to figure out it’s a car.

That’s about all the information I know about speed reading.

There was one book I read on Speed Reading that was really good and improved my reading doubly. In college I had – up to that point- the reading capacity of a Middle School student.
I did it for the same reason you did.
If only I could remember the name… its by some German Brain Surgeon. not very thick.

Yes, but don’t expect miracles in a short time. If you concentrate you can definitely increase your reading speed and comprehension a little bit quite quickly, but then you reach a “plateau” of improvement. After that you have to work hard to achieve a continuous increase in speed. If you have the willpower it is worth making the extra effort.

For some people.

Yes they do work. However you will miss a lot with them.

Try this (the link below). It worked for me.

It takes a bit of time and practice to learn the process. Once you do, your reading time will be greatly reduced and comprehension greatly improved.

I have even taught it to seniors who have successfully improved their reading.

Best wishes.
